The content of my work is inspired by the relevance of cross cultural and historical story and myth and how it is relevant in today’s world. I’m interested in how we rely on these stories to make sense of our lives and the light in which we view the world’s problems. As I research elements that find their way into my work what holds my interest is how they are timeless ideas that are also universal. 
I aspire to push the boundaries of my medium. Woodcut is a constant element in my work, as I love the carving, feel and expressive quality of the wood. It is a connection to the earth and to the history of communication. Each new block carries forth from the blocks before but something new is added to the story, marking my woodblock figures in the way we tattoo our bodies.

Laurie Szujewska (shoe yév skä) is a printmaker, typographer, and graphic designer. She currently is making prints on a letterpress concerning shapes and color.  She once worked in the printing trades and lived and played in NYC with the band members of The Chairs while creating graphics for the performing arts venue Roulette during its early years. After completing her MFA in graphic design from the Yale School of Art she moved west to California and worked as a designer and art director at Adobe Systems where she created many awarding-winning graphics and the typeface Giddyup. Abandoning computers she now makes prints using obsolete technology and often teaches at Reed College and UC Davis.  Her prints and graphic work have been exhibited in various venues in Europe and the United States and are included in many Artist Book Collections at universities, libraries, and private collections.
The metal plate retains a trace of every successive stage of etching and carving, recording a process of spontaneous change and development.And new and unexpected images are born out of the process of exploring various printmaking methods.I explore symbols of hope surviving in the face of nature’s disasters and human destructiveness. I have recently experimented with abstractions of thoughts and images taken from daily life.
“When I draw on a surface I start perceiving emerging forms. I am curious. Some marks are explicit and others ambiguous. I am usually not aware of anything specific, but follow the impulse to experience fecund possibility. I am intrigued and obsessed with this realm. It is in this state where mystery lives. It is in this state I feel most at home. Mystery in a work is vital for me. Being in the moment and keeping the work alive are the essence. I believe that as individuals, we have our interpretations and perceptions as unique indicators that are more intimate an imprint than our genetics. They inform the mesh of our experience, knowledge and intuition and do somehow become our existence.”

Included in this exhibition is a special preview of PAPER BOATS, a small flotilla will be on view in preparation for LA Printmaking on view at SGCI 2023 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The ImMigration Project, back from an exciting installation in Venice Italy, in October 2019 currently comprises 145 artists from all over North America and Europe!
